"The curtain comes up on a new season at the New Bucks Head"
Match Date : August 21st, 2021 3:00 pm
Competition : National League North
Ground : New Bucks Head
Kick Off : 15:00
The Bucks will kick off their National League North campaign on Saturday when Chorley are the visitors to the New Bucks Head.
Jamie Vermiglio’s Magpies started last season very slowly, picking up a solitary point and scoring just twice in their opening five league games. But after a 1-0 win at the New Bucks Head in November, Chorley only lost two of their next ten National League North games, as they climbed up the table to sit in 7th when the season ended abruptly.
The Lancashire club impressed in the FA Cup, too. Wins over Gateshead, York were followed up with a 3-2 win at Wigan Athletic, a 2-1 at Peterborough United and 2-0 home win over Derby County. The Magpies were eventually knocked out in the fourth round following a narrow 1-0 defeat against Wolves.
Led by former Telford favourite Jamie Vermiglio, Chorley will be looking to challenge towards the top of the table again this campaign. Their squad remains largely the same as last season, although notable departures include Elliot Newby, who joined Stockport, and Arlen Birch, who returns for a second spell with the Bucks. Meanwhile, former TNS winger Billy Whitehouse is among the new faces at Victory Park, and Adam Blakeman returns after a very brief stay at Spennymoor Town.
Vermiglio’s side conceded a late goal as they lost 1-0 at home to Brackley Town on the opening day. Gavin Cowan’s men are, of course, yet to play this season after the planned opener against Darlington was called off due to positive Covid cases within the Quakers’ squad. So, both teams will be looking to open their respective accounts this Saturday.
