Telford travel to Buckinghamshire to take on Chesham United in the Second Round of the FA Trophy this weekend.
Winners of the Southern League Premier South in 2023-24, the Generals are currently competing in their second season in the National League South. After finishing 13th last season on 59 points, Chesham have made a solid start to the current campaign, picking up 24 points from 17 games to sit in 12th spot. United have won four, drawn two and won three of their nine home league games so far, while they were dumped out of the FA Cup in front of their own fans by King’s Lynn.
The men in charge at the Meadow are James Duncan and Michael Murray, who have served as the club’s joint first team managers since October 2018. Having previously led Potters Bar Town into Step 3, Duncan and Murray built Chesham into annual promotion contenders in the Southern League Premier South, finally delivering on that promise in 2024. Off the pitch, comedian Alex Horne was appointed a director of the club in 2022, with his television series Taskmaster subsequently becoming the club’s shirt sponsor.
This season has seen Chesham become a hard nut to crack. In the league, the Buckinghamshire club have conceded only 16 goals in 17 games so far, with only Weston, Hemel and Ebbsfleet conceding fewer than the Generals. That said, Chesham were walloped 4-1 by King’s Lynn in that FA Cup game. While they might not have scored all that many themselves (19 for), Chesham have developed a knack of winning by the odd goal, with seven of their eight wins being by just a single goal margin.
Commanding left sided defender Callum Adebiyi has captained the side for much of the campaign, with regular skipper Steve Brown unable to hold down a spot in the starting eleven. Elsewhere, Telford may remember a trio of Banbury players who have now made their way to the Meadow. Connor Roberts, Alex Babos, and Giorgos Rasulo were all part of Andy Whing’s side that the Bucks beat 2-1 twice (despite going down to ten men on both occasions) in 2022-23, the latter scoring a good freekick when the Puritans came to Shropshire.
Kevin Wilkin’s men will be looking for a reaction after a disappointing second half display at Marine on Tuesday. The 2-1 defeat on Merseyside means that the Bucks are now winless in four, while October’s 6-0 win at Darlington in the FA Cup remains Telford’s only away day success this season. Meanwhile, Chesham conceded a late penalty last Saturday as they lost 1-0 at home to strugglers Sailsbury. That result also sees that the Generals have lost two of their last three at the Meadow, although that sits within a wider run of 14 points from a possible 24 (home and away) since the start of October.
Chesham made it to Round Three last year, when they were once more beaten by Salisbury at home, while the Bucks went out at this stage, going down 1-0 at Southern League Premier Division One Central outfit Hadley. AFC Telford have only twice made it past Round Three, in fact, but on both occasions the Bucks made it to the semi-finals. Having gone on a run to the First Round of the FA Cup, Wilkin’s men have already shown their pedigree in kockout competitions and will be looking for a similar showing in the Trophy.
