"Bucks aiming to get back to winning ways against Boro"

Match Date : August 19th, 2023 3:00 pm
Competition : Southern League Premier Central
Ground : New Bucks Head
Kick Off : 15:00

The Bucks will look to get back to winning ways this weekend, when Nuneaton Borough will be the visitors.

Having only narrowly missed out on promotion last year, Boro are expected to challenge towards the top end of the table again this season. Jimmy Ginnelly’s side finished 4th before losing the playoff final to Rushall on penalties. However, surprising defeats to Berkhamsted and St Ives have seen Boro get off to a slower start than may have been anticipated.

Ginnelly has kept the core of this squad together, while replacing some older heads with younger blood. Keeper Tony Breeden, midfielder Ryan Beswick and striker Luke Benbow were among the notable departures, with midfielders Callum Chettle and Millan Butterfield, forward Connor Tomlinson and keeper Dan Jezeph arriving as replacements. The Boro squad also includes plenty of experience in the shape of centre backs Scott McManus and Lathaniel Rowe-Turner, midfielder Kyle Storer and goal getter Leroy Lita.

Former Buck Matt Stenson is also among the Nuneaton ranks, and the powerful forward bagged the winner on Tuesday night as Boro picked up a 2-1 win over Long Eaton.

Ginnelly has been in charge at Liberty Way since December 2018, taking the reins halfway through a disastrous season that saw Boro finish adrift at the bottom of the table. Ginnelly has provided stability since then, with the Warwickshire club recording a string of mid-table finishes before last season’s near miss in the playoffs.

Boro had the division’s second-best home record last season, but their away form was more patchy. However, Nuneaton have won three of their last four visits to the New Bucks Head, although the Bucks ran out 3-1 winners the last time the sides met in Shropshire. That was during the 2018/19 campaign, with the Bucks also winning 2-1 at Liberty Way that season.

Kevin Wilkin spent seven years in charge at Liberty Way, and the Bucks boss will no doubt hope that his current charges will be able to deliver a positive performance this Saturday. Similarly to Boro, the Bucks have had a mixed start to the campaign and will be looking to kick on with a win this weekend.
