"Bucks face favourites Fylde this Saturday"

Match Date : November 20th, 2021 3:00 pm
Competition : National League North
Ground : New Bucks Head
Kick Off : 15:00

Telford take on table toppers AFC Fylde this weekend at the New Bucks Head.

Fylde are managed by former Telford favourite Jim Bentley, who took the reins at the Lancashire club in October 2019. But just four months into his tenure, Bentley was diagnosed with a heart condition that required double bypass surgery. Delays due to Covid meant that the former Morecambe boss only went under the knife last December, meaning he was absent from the Fylde dugout when the Coasters came to the New Bucks Head this January. But happily the surgery was a success, and Bentley has made his return to the touchline.

And having ended last year’s shortened season in second (top on points per game), Fylde wasted no time in setting out their title credentials this time around. The Coasters started the league campaign nine unbeaten, picking up 23 points from a possible 27. But the league leaders’ grip on top spot has loosened a little in recent weeks after defeats to Farsley Celtic and Curzon Ashton. Fylde do still sit atop the league on goal difference, but second placed Brackley Town do have a game in hand – the top two locked horns at Mill Farm last weekend, with an entertaining 3-3 draw just enough to keep the Coasters ahead of the Saints.

Bentley has a good mix of youth and experience in his squad. Chief among the Coasters’ weapons is the division’s top scorer, Nick Haughton. The attacking midfielder has hit 10 league goals so far, and bagged another in the FA Cup as Fylde fell to an immediate exit against Spennymoor Town.

Other dangermen include Joe Piggott, who has netted four times since his summer arrival from Altrincham, and Sam Osborne, who arrived in January after excelling for Leamington at the beginning of the 2020/21 season. Meanwhile, Bentley can also call upon experienced heads such as 38-year-olds David Perkins and summer signing Stephen Dobbie.

The Bucks have never beaten the Coasters, losing five and drawing one of the clashes between the sides; a win or a draw this weekend would be the first time Telford have taken any points off Fylde at the New Bucks Head. But the Bucks will be quietly confident having held their own on home soil so far this season, registering three clean sheets and eight points in five games at the New Bucks Head.
