The Bucks are back in action at the SEAH Stadium this weekend, when promotion-chasing AFC Fylde will be the visitors.
The Coasters are among the title favourites this season following a two-year stay in the National League Premier. The Lancashire club have won this division twice in the last decade, claiming the crown in 2017 and 2023. But while Fylde’s first stay in Step 1 held plenty of promotion promise, their second stint saw them consistently struggle at the wrong end of the table. Last year, the Coasters went through three different management teams (Chris Beech; Kevin Phillips; David Longwell and Chris Neal), but ultimately finished 23rd.
Understandably, Fylde have shaken things up in the summer. First on the agenda was the appointment of Craig Mahon as manager. The 36-year-old turned Curzon Ashton into promotion contenders in 18 months on Tameside before heading to Mill Farm in June.
Mahon lost star man Nick Haughton to Forest Green at the start of August for an undisclosed fee, but the Coasters have brought in plenty of experience in midfield to replace him. Lancashire lad Danny Mayor will look to fill Haughton’s boots. Mayor has made over 400 football league appearances and has bagged five league goals so far this term. Elsewhere in midfield, Chris Merrie has been a regular for Tranmere in League Two, while Tom Whelan played a key role in Boreham Wood’s promotion from the National League South last season. Other notable new faces include keeper Zac Jones (Haverfordwest) and young attacker Luca Thomas, who has impressed since arriving from Leeds.
While Fylde fell to a 3-1 defeat in the FA Cup at Darlington on Tuesday night, Mahon’s side have made a strong start to the season and are currently unbeaten in six in the league. Currently 4th with 19 points from eight games, the Coasters would be 2nd, one point behind leaders South Shields, but their game with Leamington a fortnight ago was abandoned on the hour mark with Mahon’s side leading 4-0.
Wilkin’s men have lost their last two in the league and so will be looking for points to start climbing the table once more. AFC Telford have never beaten the Coasters, with Fylde winning eight of the ten encounters between the sides. The Bucks have impressed on home soil in recent weeks though, reeling off four wins in a row at the SEAH Stadium. If Wilkin’s men can keep the strong home performances going, the Bucks could well cause the title chasers plenty of problems.
