Four Changes But The Bucks Fall Behind  

Kevin Wilkin made four changes to his Telford side following back-to-back opening day defeats, with Kelly-Evans, McLintock, Lambert and Stenson coming into the side in place of Pendley, Mitchell, Meddows and Moult. Early signs were promising defensively, with Lewys Benjamin producing a superb save to deny Kane Simpson's header, pushing the ball against the inside of his post before gathering.

However, the Bucks were forced into an early reshuffle when Charlie Williams picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Rio Owen after just 14 minutes - a substitution that would prove crucial later in the evening.

Merthyr took the lead against the run of general play midway through the first half when Morgan Wigley's tight-angle effort was pushed away by Benjamin, only for the hosts to work the rebound back across for Keiran Evans to finish from close range.

Owen's Stoppage-Time Header Levels Matters

Telford had offered little going forward for large periods, but a rapid break through the middle saw Remi Walker force a smart save from Cogman just after the half-hour. The Bucks continued to grow into the contest, and Stenson dropped deep to win possession before firing a shot that Cogman did well to keep out.

Then, right on the stroke of half-time, Telford drew level in dramatic fashion. Jack Lambert's inviting cross from the left picked out substitute Rio Owen, whose superb near-post header flashed over Cogman and in off the underside of the crossbar - a fitting moment for the young Welshman on home soil, given he'd only been introduced as an injury replacement.

Stenson Fires Bucks Ahead

The second half continued in similarly dramatic fashion. Benjamin was called into action again, parrying away a long-range effort, before Owen almost put Telford ahead himself, only for his tight-angled shot to be blocked after good work down the left involving Walker and Lambert.

The breakthrough came just after the hour mark, and it was a moment of real quality. Walker's incisive through ball found Stenson, who timed his run to perfection and slotted a calm, one-on-one finish past Cogman to put the Bucks in front for the first time.

Alex Fletcher picked up a caution shortly after for a professional foul, while Merthyr responded with a double substitution, bringing on Elis Watts and Lloyd Humphries for Keiran Evans and Matthew Harris as they searched for a way back into the game.

Late Merthyr Leveller Denies Bucks Victory

With Telford seemingly in control, Louis Moult replaced the goalscorer Stenson as Wilkin looked to see the game out. However, Merthyr's pressure eventually told with 14 minutes remaining, as Morgan Wigley notched his second of the evening, cutting inside from the left after a defence-splitting through ball to finish high past Benjamin as Telford defenders converged.

The hosts pushed hard for a winner in the closing stages, with the momentum firmly in their favour, and Simpson forced a corner in the final exchanges. There was late drama at the other end too, as Aneurin Livermore's poor clearing header fell to an unmarked attacker in stoppage time, though the chance was blazed horribly wide.

Match Statistics

Merthyr Town had greater possession (61% to 39%) and shots on target (7 to 5), though Telford matched them for total shots at 12 apiece and edged the corner count 3-2. A share of the spoils in South Wales sees the Bucks collect their first points of the new campaign, with plenty of positives to take from a spirited second-half performance.
