We are delighted to welcome Oliver Cawthorne to the Bucks.
Oliver, a defender, has been training with the club and impressed manager Kevin Wilkin sufficiently for him to want to bring him on board on a deal for the rest of the season.
His path to the SEAH Stadium is cosmopolitan. Born in Venezuela, where his English father was employed as a journalist, he has played in Venezuela and Panama, most recently with Alianza FC, based in Panama City. Oliver’s Staffordshire family connections brought him to our attention, and he can now add Shropshire to the stamps in his passport*
Oliver is a 6ft plus, right-footed central defender who Kevin feels can develop in the Bucks environment.
“He’s been in and trained with us and played in the Premier League in the Panamanian system. He’s come back over here, and he’s a good age; he’s 23, and he’s shown up pretty well in training. We’ve seen him in small-sided games and the bits and pieces within training, and he’s shown enough there for me to think that he’s worth persevering with.”
Although the perception may be that South America produces more technically gifted players, Kevin has seen enough from Oliver to feel that he doesn’t lack in other aspects of the game.
“As a defender, it’s important they can do the ‘nasty bits’ of heading it and kicking it, and he’s certainly shown good quality on that front, based on what we’ve seen so far. We’re quite excited to see what he can do once we hopefully get him into full games.”
After waiting for the Football Association to notify us that Oliver’s international clearance had been received, he is now registered with the Bucks and available for selection.
Please join us in saying “Hola!” and welcome to the Bucks, Oli.
*PS We know you don’t need a passport to enter Shropshire.
