We are pleased to announce the signing of Charlie Williams.
Charlie, a 21-year-old midfielder / forward, joins us having represented Stratford Town in recent seasons.
He began his career in Aston Villa’s youth academy, before switching to Burton Albion aged 15. Charlie furthered his football education with the Brewers and also had loan spells at Leamington, Banbury United and Redditch United, his hometown team.
Following the cancellation of his contract in early 2023, Charlie linked up with the Bards, and although he missed some of last season through injury, his return to the Bards’ lineup late in the campaign was a bountiful one. Charlie registered five goals in the final two matches of the season, including a hat-trick against Alvechurch in a replayed game, having scored twice in the abandoned fixture.
Bucks manager Kevin Wilkin revealed that Charlie is a player he and his staff had been keeping tabs on for some time, and felt that now was the time to bring him to the club.
“When he came out of Burton Albion, I think he was on trial at Stratford and had a bit of an impact when he first started there. Mark (Noon, assistant manager) had seen him a couple of times, so we were aware of him; he’d probably have been eighteen or nineteen years old at that stage. Charlie has the sort of profile for a player that we like, where hopefully they can come in and you can give that extra little bit of help to get them back into where they want to go, which is ultimately full-time football. He’s been loyal to Stratford and stayed there for a couple of seasons, but I think he’s now looking for that extra challenge and that extra little bit to really help him move forward again.”
Charlie’s goal of stepping up and proving his ability at a higher level matches the Bucks’ ambition for the coming season, so it’s clear that Kevin sees his signing as one that can be of mutual benefit to the goals of the club and the player.
Asked for his feelings about signing for the Bucks, Charlie said:
“I’m buzzing to be joining AFC Telford United. As soon as I spoke with the gaffer, I knew it was the right move for me. I’m here to work hard, express myself, and help the team push for success this season. I can’t wait to get started and play in front of the Bucks fans.”
Welcome to the Bucks, Charlie – it’s great to have you at the SEAH Stadium.
Charlie’s arrival takes us into double figures for the Bucks squad ahead of our return to Step 2 football on 9th August.
