Match report
The visitors started brightly and put the Bucks under pressure early on, with Dakarai Mafico in particular causing plenty of problems. There was a chance for Harvey Greenslade on five minutes, but a terrific sliding block from Ammar Dyer in the six yard box denied the Yeovil man. The Glovers also had a couple of decent headed chances from corners, but Josh Gracey dealt with them comfortably.
The first big chance of the game came in the 25th minute when Brett McGavin slid in Mafico, but the tricky wide man blazed his effort over the bar. The Bucks then went down the other end and had a glorious chance of their own. Dylan Allen-Hadley just about had the beating of Jake Wannell through the middle, but with only Jed Ward to beat and Wannell at his back, Allen-Hadley got his feet in a tangle and fluffed his shot.
With it looking as though Kevin Wilkin’s men were gradually growing into the game, Yeovil took the lead only a minute after Allen-Hadley’s miss. And it was an unfortunate goal for the Bucks to concede too. There didn’t seem to be too much danger when Greenslade looked to cross from tight to the goalline, but as Dyer closed the Glovers man down, the ball clipped off him and beat Gracey at his near post. A deserved lead for Yeovil, but one that came somewhat out of the blue and at a point when Bucks were starting to find a foothold.
The Bucks just about shaded the rest of the half, but neither side created any further real opportunities of note. 1-0 to Yeovil at half time.
After a slow start to the half, the Bucks started getting more possession and were looking more purposeful, but Ward in the Glovers goal remained largely untroubled. Both Matty Stenson and Allen-Hadley had half chances that on another day they might have done more with, but Yeovil were defending well and were keeping the Bucks at bay.
Wilkin’s men were on top at this point, but in the 63rd minute the Glovers grabbed a killer second goal that gave the Bucks a mountain to climb. A Yeovil attack down the left seemed to have broken down, but when it looked like Jordan Piggott was favourite to clear the ball, Tahvon Campbell outmuscled him on the edge of the box before confidently firing past Gracey.
The Bucks continued to push but found the visitors too tough a nut to crack. At 2-0 up, Yeovil were happy to see out the game, and Bucks couldn’t conjure up any golden opportunities. Indeed, a flair up in the 78th minute that saw both Campbell and Oli Cawthorne booked was the main point of action in the final quarter.
The Bucks battled well and matched Yeovil for good spells of the this one, but the National League side found the net at key times and were, ultimately, worthy 2-0 winners.
