Match Review

AFC Telford Women welcomed league rivals Newcastle Town to Lilleshall in the first qualifying round of the women’s FA Cup and progressed to the next round in emphatic fashion.

It took just 2 minutes for the Bucks to open the scoring. A through ball from new signing Skye Hipkiss to Meg Jones and she made no mistake 1v1 against the keeper finishing calmly. 6 minutes later it was 2 thanks to tenacious work from Rom Evans in the box to win the ball back before a deft cross onto the head of Charlotte Budd who turned home from point blank range. Just 11 minutes were on the clock when 2 became 3 as Jones picked up her second unmarked from a pinpoint corner.

Budd joined Jones with a brace on 14 minutes. An inch perfect ball from Evans cut open the Newcastle defence, Budd took one touch before hammering it home just inside the box. Budd then turned provider for the 5th as her cross into the box was turned home by the unfortunate Newcastle defender. The first half was then complete with a second goal from a corner this time headed home by Jem Smith.

HALF TIME: AFC Telford 6 Newcastle Town 0

The second half scoring was opened in the 55th minute as great work from Abbie Baldwin down the right hand side found Jem Smith on the edge of the box. A great low first time finish into the bottom corner gave her a second of the game. Another corner another goal as the Town defence were caught out by a short corner. Budd was on hand to head home to complete her hat trick.

Time for the subs to get in on the act. Firstly a long ball from Evans found Liv Bellamy on the right hand side of the box before she cut inside and unleashed a strike which went in off the underside of the bar. The scoring was completed in the 78th minute when Abi Beady pounced on a heavy touch from the Town keeper to calmly finish under pressure from the backtracking defenders.
