The Bucks will make the short trip to Lye Meadow this Saturday to take on Alvechurch.
After an up and down season in which Church ultimately finished 16th, the Worcestershire club began the current campaign in fine form picking up 16 points from the 24 on offer in the first eight games of the season. But a run of one point from the next seven games saw Church slide down the table with manager Jimmy Fry sacked as a result.
Fry was perhaps unfortunate to get the sack given the Alvechurch board acknowledged in their official club statement that the team had been “ravaged by injuries to key players at a crucial time”. But Fry was out, and in mid-November in came Tim Flowers after a short stint at Redditch, who had made a good start to the season under his leadership.
Church have picked up 16 points from the eight league games that Flowers has taken charge of so far. That run has included four clean sheets and wins over high flyers Bedford and Harborough, the only losses being narrow home defeats to Spalding and Stratford.
Alvechurch have struggled on their own patch this year, picking up just 11 of their 33 points at Lye Meadow – the third worst home record in the division. Only Banbury have conceded fewer goals than Church, though. So, while Church are only four points above the drop zone in 13th, they are definitely a tough nut to crack.
That was, of course, something the Bucks found out earlier this season, when the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the SEAH Stadium – that point being the lone point in Alvechurch’s run of one point in seven games that led to Fry’s sacking. But the Bucks have the division’s second-best away record, and Wilkin’s men ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at Lye Meadow last season. The Bucks will be looking for three more points this time around to keep the pressure on at the top of the table.
