The curtain comes down on the Bucks’ 16-year stay in steps 1 and 2 of non-league this Saturday, when Kevin Wilkin takes his boys to Lincolnshire to face Boston United.
The Pilgrims finished 7th last season, going on to overcome Kidderminster and Fylde in the playoffs before losing out in the final to York. But after those highs, the current campaign has been a less enjoyable one for the Boston faithful.
The Lincolnshire side started the season seven without a win, which led to the sacking of boss Paul Cox. And there was a strong sense of déjà vu when it was announced that Ian Culverhouse would be the man coming into to pick up the pieces – a scenario that had played out at Kettering earlier in the year.
Culverhouse was the man who masterminded King’s Lynn Town’s rise up the ranks, and the Pilgrims won their first four games under the new gaffer’s guidance. However, a run of nine without a win over December and January saw Boston still mired in trouble, but an uptick in form since then has secured their place in the National League North for another year.
United are 16th, six points above the drop zone. But despite their underwhelming position, the Pilgrims are the 8th-highest scorers in the league, although 16-goal top scorer Scott Pollock left for Yeovil Town in March. That said, Boston can still call on forward Jake Wright, who has found the net 14 times so far this term.
Boston have won five of the last seven meetings between the teams and have beaten the Bucks in each of the last four game in Lincolnshire. In fact, you have to go back to 2011 for the last Bucks win in Boston. But despite a disappointing season, the Bucks will no doubt want to go out with a win this weekend.
