As the curtain comes down on the 2024/2025 season we look back on what has been an eventful season for AFC Telford Women.
The season started under new management as Head Coach Sean Evans stepped down following a second place finish in the league and runners up in the Tom Farmer Shropshire Cup. Alex Owens stepped up to the role of Head Coach with the ambitious aim to achieve promotion and sustain a good run in the cup competitions.
In the FA Cup, the club equalled its best ever run in the competition progressing to the first round proper where they were beaten by Tier 3 Stourbridge at the SEAH Stadium. To get to that stage they had already beaten Newcastle Town, Belper Town and Ilkeston Town respectively.
In the league they we were left to rue too many draws as they head towards a 3rd place finish. Despite going 15 games unbeaten in the league, 2 defeats in the final 3 games eliminated any slim hopes of a league title. The loss of influential and prolific striker Charlotte Budd in February due an ACL injury was also costly for the Bucks.
Finally in the Tom Farmer Women’s County Cup, it was a second successive runners up spot as they fell to a 2-0 defeat in the final against Shifnal Town. This was after victories over Telford Town and Worthen along with 2 walkovers to get to the final.
It was great to see 5 players make the step up from the Under 18s during the course of the season and with over half of the squad having featured for our youth sides at some point in their careers, it demonstrates a clear pathway at the club.
What’s next
Once again the Bucks will head into next season with the aim of promotion and going one better in the county cup.
We are delighted to announce that for the first time in the clubs history the women’s first team will not have to pay to play. This is owing to some great work behind the scenes and a solid FA Cup run to make the women’s setup sustainable. It is testament to our group of loyal and committed players a number who have been with the club for several years coming through the system.
In addition to this we are pleased to re-introduce our development side. This will offer players making the step up from youth football the ideal opportunity to experience senior football. Not only this, it will allow senior players returning from injury to feature and support the younger players development.
