Telford look for crucial win against Red Rebels

AFC Telford United vs FC United of Manchester

National League North

Saturday 24th February 2018, 3pm kick off

This Saturday sees Telford take on FC United of Manchester at the New Bucks Head.

Having been within seconds of all three points at Tamworth, Rob Edwards’ men will be champing at the bit to get a win on the board this weekend.

FC United currently sit six points above the Bucks in 15th place. However, Telford have three games in hand on the Greater Manchester side and will be eager to reduce the gap to the Red Rebels this weekend.

The sides have met twice this season already, having been drawn against each other in the FA Cup. Telford won that game at the New Bucks Head 3-1, before FC United then won November’s league clash at Broadhurst Park by the same scoreline.

That victory in Manchester was part of a sequence of results that led to FC United stalwart Tom Greaves being handed the manager’s job on a full time basis. Greaves becomes only the club’s second ever manager after Karl Marginson, who managed the club from its formation in 2005 until his departure in October 2017.

Under Greaves’ stewardship, The Red Rebels have hauled themselves out of the relegation zone and into ever-shifting mid-table picture. And Greaves has led the club on the pitch too. The player boss has notched 10 goals this campaign which means he’s now FC United top scorer. The league’s top marksman, Jason Gilchrist, had bagged 15 goals for the Red Rebels across all competitions before he left for Southport in November.

The Bucks tend to fair well against the Red Rebels, who have won just once in the league away from home this season – although impressively that came against promotion-chasing York City. November’s league defeat was in fact the first time Telford had lost to FC United, and the Bucks have won every home game they’ve played against the Red Rebels. And with FC United only a few places above the Bucks in the table, Rob Edwards’ men will be after another win this weekend as they seek to close the gap on the sides above.
