Bucks look to clip the Robins’ wings

AFC Telford United vs Altrincham

Vanarama National League North

Tuesday 9th April 2019, 7.45pm kick off

Telford face another of the league’s promotion pack on Tuesday night, when Altrincham will be the visitors to the New Bucks Head.

Alty endured back-to-back relegations before sweeping to the Northern Premier League Premier title last season. The Robins finished a full 13 points clear of 2nd place Ashton United and had both the division’s best attack and best defence. Altrincham have maintained that impressive form too; they currently sit 5th and have the league’s second-best attack and fourth-best defence.

The man behind the Robins’ revival is Phil Parkinson, who took charge of the Greater Manchester club following their relegation from the National League North. Parkinson had previously transformed Nantwich Town from relegation candidates to promotion hopefuls.

And after an inconsistent start to 2019, Alty have been on fire for the last six weeks. In that time the Robins have gone unbeaten, winning five and drawing one – scoring 21 and conceding just two in the process. Their impressive recent run has included a 4-0 thumping of Chester and Saturday’s 7-0 demolition of Alfreton.

Yusifu Ceesay – who had a brief loan spell with the Bucks earlier in the season – bagged a couple of goals in that match at the Impact Arena, while another former Buck, Josh Hancock, was also on the scoresheet. And top scorer Hancock is one of the Robins’ star men with 16 goals and eight assists so far this campaign. The Bucks will also have to be wary of Alty’s other key attackers: winger John Johnston (13 goals and 14 assists) and centre forward Jordan Hulme (15 goals and nine assists).

Parkinson’s side ran out 3-1 winners when the sides met back in December. But with playoff places still up for grabs, Gavin Cowan and the Bucks will be after all three points this time around.
