Bucks harbour hopes of points against Port
Southport vs AFC Telford United
National League North
Tuesday 13th March 2018, 7.45pm kick off
Telford travel to Southport on Tuesday night in search of a first away win of 2018 and with it three valuable points.
Having started the season as one of the division’s form teams on the road, the Bucks have picked up just a single point away from home since the turn of the year. Rob Edwards’ men will be looking to improve that record this Tuesday at Haig Avenue then.
Telford were the better side when Southport came to the New Bucks Head at the end of October, but the Bucks were made to rue missed opportunities when a late penalty from Nathan Lowe saw the Sandgrounders come away with a point.
That encounter was only Kevin Davies’ second game in charge of the Merseyside club however, and the Southport squad has undergone a considerable overhaul since. In fact, no fewer than 15 players have made their Southport debuts since the start of November.
Among the new faces is club record signing Jason Gilchrist, the league’s top scorer. Gilchrist, who arrived from FC United in mid November, has bagged 14 goals in his 15 games for the Sandgrounders so far, adding to the 15 he scored for the Red Rebels in all competitions. However, the dangerous forward came off with an injury against Tamworth on Saturday and may miss Tuesday’s game.
Gilchrist’s goals have helped Port climb the table once more, as their topsy turvy season continues. The Sandgrounders picked 17 points from their first eight games, but six straight defeats across league and cup followed, prompting management duo Alan Lewer and Mark Wright to depart Haig Avenue at the end of September. Former England international Kevin Davies then picked up the reins in October and has gradually turned Port’s fortunes around.
And it’s at home where Davies’ Sandgrounders have particularly impressed. Southport have won their last five at Haig Avenue, scoring 14 and conceding just twice.
The Bucks’ last visit to Southport resulted in a 3-0 Telford triumph though. And while that victory came back in 2015, the Bucks will be after a repeat result on Tuesday.
