Telford hope to tame the Lions
Guiseley vs AFC Telford United
National League North
Saturday 11th August 2018, 3pm kick off
Telford head to Yorkshire this weekend to take on a Guiseley side looking to bounce back to the top flight of non-league football at the first time of asking.
Having spent the previous two seasons flirting dangerously with relegation, the Lions luck finally ran out last term, as they finished rock bottom of the National League Premier – despite a switch to full time football in October 2017.
With their three-season stay in non-league’s top tier over, Guiseley have reverted to part time status once more, and have turned to Marcus Bignot and Russ O'Neill to revive their fortunes. The duo, appointed in May, replace caretaker boss Sean St Ledger, who was in interim charge of the club following Paul Cox’s sacking in February.
Bignot and O’Neill have spent the summer reshaping their squad and have made some notable signings. Among them, experienced centre half and one time England C captain Scott Garner arrived from Halifax, midfielder Kingsley James came in from Chester City, while former Alfreton man Paul Clayton joined in a player-coach capacity.
Things haven’t gone to plan for the Lions so far though, losing both of this season’s games and failing to find the net in the process. That said, their encounters with Boston and Chorley were tight affairs that could easily have turned out differently.
The Bucks, meanwhile, remain unbeaten after two games and have chalked up back to back clean sheets. The Telford defence was less secure when the sides last met at Nethermoor however, when the Bucks charge towards the title was temporarily halted by Guiseley’s emphatic 6-1 victory.
But that was back in April 2014, and Telford have looked solid so far this season. After the Bucks earned an impressive point at Kidderminster on Tuesday, Telford chief, Gavin Cowan, will want his side to put in another determined away day performance this weekend.
